Cook pasta according to package directions.
Gradually add half-and-half, stirring constantly until combined (the mixture will be slightly lumpy).
Heat oil in a Dutch oven over medium-high heat.

Add onion and the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt.
Cook, stirring often, until softened, about 4 minutes.
Add the cream cheese mixture, the pasta, chicken and basil; stir to combine.

Transfer to the prepared baking dish; sprinkle evenly with the remaining 1/2 cup mozzarella.
Cover with foil; bake until warmed through, about 20 minutes.
Garnish with additional basil leaves, if desired; serve warm.
